Friends of local Squamish resident Raquel Nicolau have started a GoFundMe after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
According to a fundraiser organized by her friend Talita Almeida, Raquel was diagnosed in January. Despite the whirlwind of doctor’s appointments, sleepless nights, and bureaucratic hurdles, she remains resilient in the face of adversity.

A mother to a 12-year-old daughter, Raquel not only discovered her passion for climbing but also attained her diploma in Professional Counseling and became a Registered Therapeutic Counselor. However, as a self-employed individual, Raquel does not qualify for employment insurance, which adds financial strain to her challenging circumstances.
“Raquel once told me that one of the main things she needs to improve is accepting help from others. What a better time to practice?” says her friend Almeida. “Please help support Raquel and her daughter through her recovery journey. Your contribution will ease financial burdens, which in turn will help ease emotional ones.”
Raquel is preparing for her upcoming double mastectomy, which is scheduled for early April and is expected to last for six to 8 weeks. Her parents are also travelling from Brazil to lend their support.
