Vancouver woman charged in fatal crash on Highway 1

Staff report
March 2, 2025 10:30am

A Vancouver woman is facing multiple charges in connection with a fatal head-on collision that killed two people and injured two others on the Trans Canada Highway last summer.

The crash occurred on June 26, 2024, at approximately 11:40 p.m., when a vehicle traveling east in the westbound lanes near Westport Road in West Vancouver collided head-on with another car. Two people were killed, while the remaining two passengers were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Following an investigation by the West Vancouver Police Department’s Major Investigation Team, the driver, Melesesh Sahalo, 25, was arrested and has now been charged by the BC Prosecution Service with two counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and two counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm. Sahalo is scheduled to appear in North Vancouver Provincial Court on Wednesday, February 26.

“This was a detailed and lengthy investigation into a terribly tragic event, and we are pleased to have charges sworn,” said Sgt. John McCormack of the West Vancouver Police. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the survivors and to the family and friends of those who were killed that day.”

Police thanked the Integrated Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Service (ICARS), West Vancouver Fire & Rescue, and BC Emergency Health Services for their response.
