Tricity Local News corrects errors on the page where they appeared, with a dated note that says what changed. Readers who find one are asked to report it.
How to report an error
Email media@tricitylocalnews.com with the page URL, the sentence or figure in question, and the source that shows the error. A report with a source is resolved faster. A report without one is still checked.
Response times
A report is acknowledged within two business days. A factual error is corrected within five business days of the report, or the reporter is told why more time is needed and when to expect the correction. Errors in a figure that readers are likely to act on, such as a price, a deadline or a regulatory requirement, are corrected the same business day they are confirmed.
Three kinds of change
A correction fixes a factual error: a wrong figure, date, name, attribution or scope. The page gets a dated note that states the original error and the corrected fact.
A clarification adds context to a sentence that was accurate but could be misread. The page gets a dated note saying what was clarified.
An update adds newer data to a page whose earlier figures were correct when published. The page shows the review date and the new figures carry their own source and date. Routine updates do not get a correction note.
Spelling, grammar and formatting fixes that leave the meaning unchanged get no note.
Where the note appears
The correction note sits at the point of the change or at the end of the page, dated, and stays there. The page’s displayed date changes only when the content changes.
Removals
Pages are not removed to erase an error. The record stays. A page is taken down only when its subject no longer exists in a form that can be reported accurately, or for a legal reason; a notice at the URL says so.
Quoted and third-party material
An error inside a quotation or a cited document is noted as such, with the accurate figure added beside it, rather than silently altered.
Disputes
A reporter who disagrees with the outcome can ask for a second review by an editor not named on the page. The second review replies within ten business days.
